Bringing Home a New Puppy: What to Expect
Bringing a new puppy home is super exciting! Not many things bring so much joy as a furry new addition to the family. But remember that up to that point, the only family your puppy knew was their mom and siblings. Your home is also a new environment so, the change may be a little traumatic.
Refrain from having many people over to celebrate the coming home of the new furry member of the family. For the first few weeks, let this joy be within your family. Let your pup acclimatize to their new home and family first.
Here are a few tips to help your pup transition into their new home.
Introduction to the Home
Before taking your pup into the house, take them outside where you want them to go potty. Remember to use a command that you will always stick to. Give them roughly 10-15 minutes, and if they do not relieve themselves, take them into the house. Try again after 10 minutes.
In the house, let them explore designated areas like the puppy-proofed area where their crate is. Allowing them to roam everywhere can lead them to a sensory overload. Later, you can introduce them to the rest of the house, leaving out the places you want to remain off-limits.
Introduction to Family
Try to introduce them to every member of the family one at a time. This might be difficult at first because of all the excitement. However, it is beneficial to give them a chance to meet and bond with each member of the household separately.
Start Enforcing Rules
Your puppy needs to learn the house rules from the beginning. This will help them to adjust well, feel comfortable, and be confident in their new home. Resist the need to yell or punish them so soon. Yelling and punishing will only frighten and confuse them. Use gentle redirection instead.
Stick to a schedule for potty breaks, playtime, mealtime, and naptime. Puppies need plenty of sleep and will often sleep with every opportunity. At naptime, take your puppy to their crate. It is a safe space for them to rest.
First Night Home
Some puppies will cry for the first few nights. If this happens, refrain from picking them up to console them. Take them out of the crate to the potty area, just in case they need to go potty. Otherwise, let them get used to the new environment at their own pace.
This will also help them to understand the rules. Some people place their pup's crates in their rooms. This gives the pets some comfort knowing that their new owners are close by. You can also give them a stuffed toy to snuggle with.
Be Patient and Bond
Gradually give them access to more places in your house under your supervision. Walk around with them and help them feel comfortable wherever you go. With plenty of affection, gentle correction, and rewards for good behavior, your pup will begin to feel comfortable in your home. In the process, you will establish a bond that will endure throughout the years.
