How to Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter: Cold Weather Tips

As winter kicks in, it is important to think about your pet’s safety. Pets are vulnerable to hypothermia or low body temperature. They can also get frostbite if exposed to cold weather for long periods. Freezing temperatures coupled with wind chill can prove to be deadly for pets. As a pet owner, you should be careful about letting your pet outside for an extended period.

It is important to remember that if you are feeling cold, your pet is probably feeling the same way. Remember that animal fur does not offer much protection in extremely cold weather. Every pet is different, but those with little or no fur tend to be more vulnerable to the cold. You can keep your pet safe this winter by following some simple tips.

Keep Pets Indoors

It is a good idea to keep pets indoors during the cold weather. Limit your time outdoors, and if you must take walks, make them short. If you have outdoor pets, bring them into the house or garage during winter. Your pets might enjoy running around in the backyard, but they are simply not equipped for cold weather. Their fur is not a perfect insulator in extreme temperatures. You should also remember that wet fur loses most of its insulating capabilities.

Use Warm Clothing

Pet sweaters and coats have become very popular, and you can dress your pet for the weather. The canine clothes are not just fashionable; they help to keep pets warm in cold weather. Invest in some warm sweaters for your pet and include booties to protect the paws. If you have a cat, using clothing may not work. Most cats do not tolerate clothing well. Do not leave wet clothing on your pet as it can cause frostbite.

Protect the Paws

It is important to prepare your pet’s paws before letting him go outdoors. Clip any long furs on the pads and between the toes. This will prevent the formation of ice balls when walking in the snow. When you get back indoors, make sure that you wipe the animal carefully using a moist rag. Pay particular attention to the paws and legs. Remove all the snow and ice as well as any harmful chemicals or salt that the animal could ingest.

Do Not Leave Your Pet in the Car

You should never leave your pet alone in the car during winter. The moment you turn off the ignition, the temperature in the vehicle drops very quickly. The car can soon feel like a freezer, which can be dangerous for your pet. You should limit travel during winter to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. Take the dog with you when you get out of the car, even for a shortstop.

Be careful where you choose to walk. Avoid areas with rock salt that can be toxic and irritating. Look for areas that are safe for your pet or ensure that your dog has dog booties while outdoors. You can also apply organic wax or petroleum jelly on the paw pads to ensure protection. Stay away from frozen water bodies and avoid antifreeze.
